Spicy Swiss Steak

1 1/2 teaspoons of salt
1/2 teaspoon of ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon of pepper
2 pounds of beef round steak, about 1 inch thick
1/3 cup of all purpose flour
3 tablespoons of shortening or salad oil
1 medium onion, minced
3 cups of peeled tomatoes, fresh or canned  

Rub the salt, allspice and pepper well into steak. Dredge with flour. Pound in the flour with edge of a plate or mallet. Heat the shortening in a heavy casserole dish. Brown the meat quickly in hot fat on both sides. Add the onion and tomatoes. Cover and bake in a preheated oven at 350ºF. for 1 1/2 hours or until the meat is tender. Check occasionally for moisture. If necessary add a little hot water, or tomato to prevent sticking. Makes 6 servings
