Baked Asparagus w/ Almond Cheese Sauce

1 1/2 pounds of asparagus
salt
1/4 cup of butter or margarine
1/2 cup of small soft bread crumbs
2 tablespoons of all purpose flour
1 cup of milk
1 cup of shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup of toasted slivered almonds
pepper

Wash and trim asparagus and cook in boiling salted water until tender. Drain, arrange in 9 inch piepan or other greased small shallow baking dish. Melt butter in saucepan and add 2 tablespoons to bread crumbs, mixing well to coat. Blend flour into remainder. Add milk and cook, stirring until smooth and thickened. Stir in cheese, almonds and salt and pepper to taste. Pour over asparagus and sprinkle with bread cubes. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350ºF.) about 20 minutes. Makes 4 servings
